The Richard E. Greenleaf Distinguished Chair in Latin American Studies

The Richard E. Greenleaf Distinguished Chair in Latin American Studies brings to campus pre-eminent scholars and professionals, including scientists, writers, artists, and public officials, who are distinguished in their fields and can contribute positively to the Tulane academic community through teaching, research, and interactions with Latin Americanist faculty and students. Greenleaf Chairs are widely-recognized authorities in their fields who have made major contributions to knowledge, methodological innovation, and society.

Greenleaf Chairs spend one, and occasionally two, semester(s) at the Stone Center where their presence is intended to stimulate engagement with Latin Americanist faculty and students in a variety of ways. These might include conferences, seminars, workshops, joint research initiatives, public lectures, and/or teaching. The specific responsibilities attached to the appointment are defined in consultation with the Executive Director of the Stone Center.

The Distinguished Chair is supported by a competitive stipend, office space at the Stone Center, and guidance in finding local accommodations. The costs of roundtrip airfare are paid by the chairholder. Funding can also be made available to attend a conference or to support other events at the University related to the visitor’s fields of interest during or following their semester of residence.

Greenleaf Chairs are nominated by University faculty and selected by the Center’s Executive Committee. Direct applications are not accepted. The selection process is directed by the Executive Committee of the Stone Center. The Committee delineates critical areas that are deemed optimal for advancing the strategic needs of the Latin Americanist community and solicits nominations from faculty sponsors. The critical areas might be to strengthen or complement existing or emerging areas of strength.
