Talk by Ángel Delgado Gómez at the Latin American Library

‘Scholarly editing of the Chronicles of the Indies‘

Ángel Delgado Gómez (Ph.D., University of Texas-Austin) is a leading specialist in the history and literature of early modern Spain and Spanish America. Professor Delgado Gómez has published extensively on the writings of the Spanish conquest of the New World, in addition to his work as a prominent editor of major historical sources in the field. He is the editor of Hernán Cortés‘s Cartas de relación (Madrid: Editorial Castalia, 1993) and Spanish Historical Writing About the New World, 1493-1700 (Providence: The John Carter Brown Library, 1994), which was the product of an exhibition he curated at the John Carter Brown Library in 1992 to mark the quincentenary of the Spanish arrival in the Americas. His most recent publications include a critical edition and historical study of Bernal Díaz del Castillo‘s Historia verdadera de la conquista de la Nueva EspaÃ±a (Madrid: Homo Legens, 2009). This talk will examine the scholarly editing of the literature of Spanish conquest, with hands-on discussion of imprints from the Latin American Library‘s special collections. This event is sponsored by the Center for Scholars in the School of Liberal Arts, the Stone Center for Latin American Studies, and the Department of Spanish and Portuguese.
