The Stone Center, CCSI, and the New Orleans Film Festival present: Playing with Maracatu (Brincando com Maracatu) + Resurrection! Airto Moreira & the Preservation Hall Jazz Band

The Stone Center for Latin American Studies and the Cuban and Caribbean Studies Institute are sponsoring the upcoming New Orleans Film Festival showing:

Playing with Maracatu (Brincando com Maracatu).

Maracatu is a traditional parading culture originating in northeastern Brazil. Its roots can be traced back to Africa. Saturated with spirituality and secrecy, it is largely unknown beyond Brazil. However, Brazilian musician Aline Morales has brought Maracatu culture to the unlikeliest of places: Toronto, Canada. A line has formed a group of Canadians with whom to practice Maracatu drumming with, some Brazilian, some not. As much as Aline and the members of her new group feel as though they are connected to Maracatu culture, a trip to Recife, Brazil, forces them to question their own motivations and appropriation of Maracatu culture. Who is the culture for? Who is allowed to practice the culture? Who profits from the culture? While the explicit connections to New Orleans are not drawn in the film, these are issues that have great resonance for New Orleans masking and parading traditions that are under constant threat of appropriation, exploitation and extinction.

Resurrection! Airto Moreira & the Preservation Hall Jazz Band. Presented with support from The Dan Lucas Memorial Fund. Two jazz forces join in this lively film. Airto Moreira, a world renowned Brazilian percussionist meets the legendary Preservation Hall Jazz Band at Mardi Gras in New Orleans. This musical alchemy reignites his passion to play.

Check the NOFF website for more information on the film, location, and tickets.
