Please join us in welcoming Dr. Joy Langston for a seminar on Mexico as part of the Latin America at the Crossroads spring seminar series. The 2018 presidential election in Mexico will likely be one of the most consequential in recent decades. Ongoing problems color the election, such as widespread corruption, a failed war on drugs, and middling economic growth. But there are also new concerns, such as fears of Russia meddling and resurgent Mexican nationalism, stoked by President Trump. Will this be the election when voters turn to a maverick: Andrés Manuel López Obrador? If López Obrador is elected, would he take a hardline stance on the United States, or chose pragmatism?

Dr. Joy Langston is professor of political science at Centro de Investigación y Docencia Económicas in Mexico City. Her current research interests include organizational changes in the Institutional Revolutionary Party (PRI), legislative recruitment, congressional campaigning, and federalism. The former editor of Política y gobierno, she is the author of many book chapters and articles in such journals as the Journal of Politics, Comparative Politics, and Party Politics. She holds a PhD from Duke University.

Throughout the Americas, countries are facing questions about the future direction of their domestic and international politics. In Latin America at the Crossroad, the Stone Center for Latin American Studies and the Center for Inter-American Policy and Research will host speakers to discuss the critical junctures currently facing Honduras, Mexico, Colombia, and Brazil.

Join us as speakers address the big picture of domestic politics, including the current political environment and recent political developments, as well as the state of each country‘€™s bilateral relationship with the United States.
