Latin America at the Crossroads: Brazil

February 17th, 2017
4:00 PM

Greenleaf Conference Room
100A Jones Hall

Join the Center for Inter-American Policy and Research for the second talk in the series Latin America at the Crossroads to discuss recent political developments in Brazil. The seminar will address the question of what does the political future hold for Brazil following the impeachment of President Dilma Rousseff and the arrest of the powerful former speaker of the lower house of Congress for corruption?

The seminar will be led by Dr. Timothy Power, Director of the Brazilian Studies Programme and Associate Professor in Brazilian Studies at the Latin American Centre at the University of Oxford. Dr. Power is a comparative political scientist whose research concerns democratization and political institutions (parties, legislatures, and elections) in modern Latin America, particularly Brazil. He has studied the democratic transition in the 1980s and the role of the political right in the 1990s in Brazil. He is currently working on a discussion of the consequences of ‘coalitional presidentialism’ in Brazil.
