“Virtual Citizens in Cuban Alternative Blogosphere Today”

Talk by Orlando Luis Pardo Lazo (author, photographer, independent blogger)

As the Cuban Revolution moves toward reforms, one thing remains unchanged: the traditional lack of fundamental rights for their citizens. Testing the bounds of expression, a critical independent blogosphere struggles for more spaces and recognition. However, the government has responded by creating an official blogosphere (blockosphere?) that mirrors the country‘€™s official press, reproducing its belligerent logic. This talk will focus on what has been attained in this cyber to the street struggle, and what has yet to be achieved in this residue of the Cold War in the Americas.

This talk will be given in English. Light reception to follow. Sponsored by the Department of Spanish and Portuguese, and the Cuban and Caribbean Studies Institute. All are welcome to attend.

Orlando Luis Pardo Lazo was born in Havana, Cuba in 1971. He has worked as a free-lance writer, photographer, and is the blogger behind Lunes de Post-Revolution:
