Sofía Macher, a sociologist and activist for human rights in Peru, is an international expert on transitional justice. She has been a commissioner of the Commission of Truth and Reconciliation in Peru (2001-2003), which investigated human rights violations during the insurgence of the Peruvian Communist Party, Shining Path (Sendero Luminoso) from 1980 to 2000. In 2006, Ms. Macher was appointed as president of the Reparations Council of Peru, a governmental organization that officially registers the victims of the Internal War and provides them with legal support. As a consequence of her experience in this area, Ms. Macher has become an international advisor on transitional justice and the organization of commissions of truth through the United Nations Development Programme. She has worked with the governments of the Solomon Islands, Libya, and is currently working as a consultant with Yemeni government.
