Two Latin American Studies Seniors to Speak at Commencement

May 14th, 2012

The Stone Center is proud to announce that two of its graduating seniors have been chosen to be student speakers at this year‘€™s Commencement Ceremonies. Laura Meagher will speak at the Unified Ceremony and Sam Tabory at the Newcomb-Tulane College Diploma Ceremony, both of which will be held on Saturday, May 19 in the Mercedes-Benz Superdome.

Laura Meagher is a Latin American Studies and Spanish double major from Charlottesville,Virginia. Having spent a gap year in Spain after high school, Laura was interested in the Spanish language and history, and after attending a TULASO pachanga her freshman year, she knew Latin American Studies was the right choice. Laura noted that the Latin American Studies Senior Seminar ‘€œput a whole new spin on [her] writing‘€ and the speech she has prepared for commencement benefited from the class. In addition to her academic work, Laura is an intern in the admissions office and has served on the Crawfest Planning Board for the past two years.

Sam Tabory, from Kansas City, is also graduating with a double-major in Latin Americans Studies and Spanish, a rather obvious choice after spending summers in Latin America during high school. He says, ‘€œLatin American Studies, more than anything, taught me how to appreciate and serve and better understand complicated and complex communities,‘€ a tool that has allowed him to grow to know and love New Orleans as well as Tulane. This excitement for both the city and university community fueled Sam‘€™s decision to speak at commencement.

Laura commented, ‘€œI think it‘€™s great Sam and I are both the representatives as the speakers and as Latin American Studies majors. A lot of times when people find out I‘€™m a LAST major they don‘€™t really understand what it is.‘€ But the interdisciplinary nature of the major, which allows students to focus their studies based on personal interests, is exactly what Laura loves most. ‘€œI‘€™m glad this year everyone gets to hear from not one, but two elusive LAST students.‘€ We couldn‘€™t agree more.

Congratulations to Laura and Sam for their achievements and for representing the Stone Center and Latin American Studies at the 2012 Commencement Ceremonies. The Stone Center wishes them both very bright futures, wherever Latin American Studies may lead them!
