Through the Lens: Teaching Latin America through Film

In collaboration with Vanderbilt University and Millsaps College, Tulane University’s Stone Center for Latin American Studies welcomed 22 educators from across the United States to an intensive film institute exploring the diversity of Latin America through film. Hosted at Millsaps College in Jackson, Mississippi on June 5th through 10th, 2011, faculty and film scholars from the three institutions presented on five films specially selected for use in the high school classroom. Participants in the institute explored vital issues in Latin America and learned how to incorporate film into their curriculum and within the school. The goal of this institute was to engage educators in the power of using film in their teaching of Latin America as well as highlight key contemporary films that address issues relevant and appropriate for the high school classroom. The five films selected covered both regional and subject diversity.

A list of the films screened in this summer’s institute is provided below. Accompanying screening guides and online curricula are also available through the Stone Center’s Latin American Resource Center’s Lending Library and in the K-12 curricula page.
